Disney CEO Bob Iger has had nothing but positive things to say about Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi, both in terms of directing ability and creative vision. It seems that Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy was equally impressed by his work, as it was finally announced today that Rian Johnson has been selected to write and direct the next trilogy, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.
It’s hard to know how to feel about this news. It’s great that so many higher ups are satisfied with Johnson’s vision, but since we’re still just over a month away from The Last Jedi hitting theaters, it’s hard to get overly excited. If it’s fantastic, that’s excellent news, and I think it’ll get a lot of people excited for the next sequel trilogy despite concerns that Star Wars is oversaturating its market. If The Last Jedi is met with mediocre reception, it may be harder for Johnson to maintain interest in the franchise, although considering he’ll have a few years to perfect a storyline, it’s possible that it will be better received than this trilogy series, which may possibly suffer some criticism for lacking a tighter unifying vision throughout the different directors.
